Careel Bay Wetlands Restoration

Located between Avalon and Palm Beach, Careel Bay is one of Pittwater's finest locations for migratory shorebirds. However, in recent years, urban encroachment, increased marine traffic and disturbance by dogs and humans has seen a large reduction in the incidence of shorebirds in this location. Another threat is the proliferation of mangroves due to changes to local hydrology, which is a result of dredging in Pittwater and alterations to Careel Creek.

Pittwater Council is seeking to restore Careel Bay to the level where it can once more support numbers of migratory shorebirds. This project requires a multi-disciplinary approach and I have been contracted to monitor the bird population of the bay and surrounding wetlands and assist with the creation of a sizeable wader roost and birdwatching hide.

I have created a number of interpretive signs which are currently in place.

The project commenced in July 2007 and, whilst still in its infancy, is ongoing.
